Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – It’s a whole new world for ‘Aladdin’ as the film earned over $86 million for the first 3 days of its release, staying atop the box office over the weekend and exceeding expectations.
The live action remake of the Disney classic grossed an estimate of $86.1 million so far, already surpassing its projected $80 million earnings for the entire Memorial Day weekend, The Hollywood Reporter wrote. With mostly positive reviews, the film is expected to reach the $100 million mark for its four-day bow.
Overseas the film also made $121 million for its debut.
‘Aladdin’ also fared better than last year’s Memorial Day opener ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’. The film raked in $84 million during its first Friday to Sunday run and $103 million during its Friday to Monday debut weekend, Forbes reported.
The film, which stars Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, bested ‘John Wick 3’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which rounded out the top three for the Memorial Day weekend. ‘John Wick 3’ took home an estimated $30.5 million and ‘Avengers’ with $21.9 million over the holiday weekend.
‘Aladdin’, which has Massoud in the titular role, received a mix response from viewers and critics. It currently has a 57 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also stars Will Smith as Genie, which popularly voiced by the late Robin Williams in its 1992 animated version.
‘Aladdin’ marks the latest in Disney’s consistent streak of successes, following ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ which dominated box office records worldwide during their release.
