Honolulu, HI, United States (4E) – Health officials say three more visitors to Hawaii have been infected with rat lungworm disease in recent months.
The new cases bring the state’s total to five confirmed in 2019 and 10 the previous year, the health department said.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control indicated the three cases are unrelated, however.
Angiostrongyliasis, or rat lungworm disease, is caused by a parasitic worm and can affect a person’s brain and spinal cord.
Severe headaches and neck stiffness are symptoms of the disease, which can cause neurological problems, severe pain and long-term disability.
