Atlanta, GA, United States (4E) – Kristin Wiig’s upcoming film has pulled out of production in Georgia after the state signed an anti-abortion law.
Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s comedy ‘Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar’ will no longer shoot in Georgia after the state signed into law the so-called “heartbeat bill”, a representative for the actress told Variety. Wiig is co-writing of the film, which will be produced by Gloria Sanchez Productions and distributed by Lionsgate.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill on May 7. The law, which will go into effect on January 1 next year, would ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat has been detected, which happens approximately six weeks into the pregnancy.
Georgia is a known location for many film and television shoots and the legislation has caused major backlash and calls for Hollywood to boycott the state.
Aside from Wiig’s new movie, Amazon Studio’s drama series ‘The Power’ has also decided to pull the scouts that have been looking for potential filming locations in Georgia. The series, which is based on the eponymous female-centric science fiction novel, The Washington Post reported.
In a statement, the show’s executive producers Jane Featherston and Naomi De Pear said that the decision to cancel the “planned scout to George” for the show is a “direct response to the signing of the ‘heartbeat bill.'”
“We feel we have to stand up for a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body, and so while this is not a decision we have taken lightly, we feel strongly that it is the right one at this point in time,” Featherstone and De Pear said.
