Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Over 13,000 hoverboards made by seven different manufacturers were recalled Tuesday due to a defect in the boards’ lithium-ion batteries.
The batteries in the self-balancing boards can overheat posing a risk of the hoverboards smoking, catching fire or exploding.
Sonic Smartboard, Tech Drift, iLive, iHoverspeed, Go Wheels, Drone Nerds, and Smart Balance Wheelbrand hoverboards were all affected by the recall.
There have been no reports of injury linked to this recent round of recalls, however there were two reports of property damage resulting; one claim resulting in over $40,000 of property damage.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 520,000 self-balancing scooters in the past year.
