Washington, DC, United States (4E) – President Donald Trump denies he was behind a request to obscure a Navy ship named after former veteran, senator and presidential candidate John McCain.
He defended the White House request, however, and said whoever did it was “well meaning”.
Senior Navy officials scuttled the attempt anyway and also issued its first tweet in over five years about the matter.
“The Navy is proud of that ship, its crew, its namesake and its heritage”.
Trump indicated it would be beneath him to request something of that nature.
“I would never do a thing like that,” he said. “Now, someone did it, because they thought I didn’t like him. OK? And, they were well meaning, I will say…they thought they were doing me a favor because they know I’m not a fan of John McCain.”
